Bean Count Contest #6

How many beans in this jar?

There are 2 types of beans:

• Green Lentils
• Adzuki Beans

The Rules

• The jar of beans is at the plant-based booth at the Davis Farmers’ Market every Saturday (weather permitting) from 8:00-1:00 in the non-profit/community area.
• It is free to guess (estimate) the number of beans in the jar. You can submit your guess online here: Bean Count Guess. You can update your guess by submitting another one.
• The contest will end at 6:00 pm on October 6th. It will then take a little while to carefully count the beans.
• The 4 guesses that are closest to the actual count will win the prizes. The winners will be notified and the results will be posted on this web site.

  If there is a tie I will choose one of the guessers at random to receive the prize. The others will receive a nice Eat Beans Not Beings sticker.

  Everyone will receive a message - win or lose.

• In November 2024 there will be another contest (with different beans).

The Guesses (aka Estimates)

Several people carefully analyzed, counted, measured, and multiplied. Others made a 'wild ass guess' by gut instinct and intuition. Estimation is a difficult art.

The Winners

There were 8 people who guessed 2000!! They all tied for the 4th place prize. If only they had guessed 2001! A random drawing was done to determine the winner of the cookbook. The others will get a nice Eat Beans Not Beings sticker.

The Beans and Recipes

The oldest cultivated bean. It plays a huge part in Indian cooking but also in many dishes of Europe and the Middle East. There are four main distinct types (plus regional variations): Common brown/green: your all purpose rustic lentil, when you want something that gets tender enough to be mashed but can still hold its shape if you'd like. Red/orange (aka split, Egyptian, massor dal): It cooks quickly and collapses to a golden, easily digested mush, making it perfect for dals. French green (du Puy): A small lentil that stays firm, making it traditional in cold marinated salads. Brown varieties that are similar in Italy and Spain are Castelluccio/Umbrian and pardina, respectively. Black: Named "Beluga" by one company because it looks like caviar, meaning you can soak it in a brine to evoke just that thing – or use it anywhere you'd use the du Puy. Easy Lentil Soup

Adzuki Beans

Little red beans native to Asia, where they are traditional in making sweets. Related to mung beans, they have a smooth texture and a sweet, nutty flavor. Sweet Red Bean Paste Red Bean-Filled Muffins
